“Ya’ done good kid.” A phrase that melts my heart.
My dad doesn’t speak like that. In normal conversation you will never catch him with wacky grammar, but somehow this phrase became his trademark compliment. After piano recitals, final exams, and even on my wedding day I remember hearing “Ya’ done good kid” whispered in my ear while he enveloped me in a big hug and planted a slightly scratchy-whiskered peck on my cheek.
I love it. Its not-normal-ness is what makes it special.
I grew up as the oldest of three girls. We didn’t always have lots of stuff, but we always had the strongest family imaginable. Never did I doubt that I lived in the happiest home on earth. Even during the rough times (and yes, there were some pretty rough spots), I couldn’t imagine a better place to be.
I love spending time with him.
Dad is a man of strong faith, believing wholeheartedly in the power of Jesus Christ and the wisdom held in the Bible. That focused determination allowed him to begin a beautiful ministry training pastors in expository preaching in New England. He works doing what he loves, and he works hard every day. No trends or gimmicks – he believes that “the truth will set you free” plain and simple.
Everyone should have a dad who can honestly say that faith and family are his entire world. I am blessed.
Hey Dad, Ya’ done good too.
If you have a moment, take a look at his ministry site; the New England Center for Expository Preaching. There is some amazing stuff going on there.
I couldn’t agree more…very well said. xoxo
You may have “done good” but don’t let it go to your head. No one has risen to the standard set by your mom.
She has had to put up with me and my crazy ideas for 40 years.
Her “Done Good” has to be capitalized.
