Have you figured out that my husband never does anything halfway yet? The kids’ tree house is no different.
What started out as plans for a simple treehouse as part of our summer Physics Playground project, has turned into a huge family event. Grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends are all helping to make the dream come true.
Grandpa hung the block & tackle (aka. giant pulley) for us. I got scared just watching him, but he was sure-footed.Drilling rock to place pins. Old-school style.Hard at workHaving an arborist in the family is super helpful when trying to build a tree house – I didn’t know that building around the tree was bad for it. It can constrict growth. We were told to use 1 tree and brace the other side with legs so the tree doesn’t need to support all that weight. Good to know. (little man was excited just to wear the official tree-worker hard hat)Getting ready to haul the frame up. There’s potential energy in those little limbs – but we were very grateful for a strong uncle.Pulleys at work.Almost there. Time to tighten the straps.Assembling the ladderWall #1 going up!Brace it quick!Smiles don’t get much bigger than that.Even the littlest family members took their turn helping out with the tree-house. Keeping the straight edge from moving and holding the end of the tape measure is important work!So happy!Putting in the floors.Working together toward a common goal always makes my kids the happiest.Prepping the mahogany decking on the porch. What? Doesn’t every treehouse have mahogany decking? – Just kidding, it was a leftover from a pool that my husband ripped out years ago. Recycling at its best!
In the end it will be large enough to sleep 10 kids (not quite big enough for all of the kids in the family, but a good start) and it will have a porch and crow’s nest – A far cry from the 5×5′ box idea we started with.
We still have a roof, screens, doors, and a porch railing to install, and a few ropes to untangle, but work is in progress. Only 2 more weeks of summer! I can’t wait to show you all of our finished physics projects! Stay tuned.
Wow! Just, wow!
Thanks Erin. It has been fun to see the project taking on a life of its own.
Sure wish we were still doing Workcamp! I see lots of potential in these kids! That looks like every kid’s dream! Such fun!
You forgot to mention the slide to the lake that doubles as a ski jump in winter. :)
Shh… Don’t give them any more ideas. They are already talking about taking the spiral staircase out of the house and installing it in the treehouse.
Wow! What a talented family! Looking forward to seeing the results!
I agree with Jennie! It is nice when all the family members work as team members.
David, I just popped by your treehouse site – how fun! Those workshops look like a lot of fun.
Hey Sheryl, It’s my pleasure that you have visited my website. Thanks…..
