When we are at the lake, our days are usually filled with swimming, boating and all things outdoors. On rainy days that changes drastically. With 5 families trapped in a small space, you would think that it could quickly devolve into a mopey grumpy mess, but rainy days may just be my favorite.
Everyone’s outgrown favorite toys and childhood treasures have all migrated to the lake. It is the stuff that is too good to throw away, yet could easily be labeled clutter at home. They are stored in the nooks and crannies of our camp bedrooms until the rainy days arrive. Then, we get to to go back in time and find all of those favorites again.
The record player is a perfect example. It gets more use than the CD player ever will. The kids absolutely adore read-along books, and I adore the trip down memory lane.
Seeing them scramble to be the one chosen to pull the 45 out of its paper sleeve reminds me of my own childhood: Sitting by my little plastic record player waiting for the bling of Tinkerbell’s wand to tell me to turn the page. Inviting a neighborhood friend to come over (from all the way across Miss Sarah’s yard) and listen to our tiny stack of records over and over. Jostling with my sisters to decide which of the three of us got to hold the book.
Good stuff.
Bring on the rain!
The Stuff We Didn’t Throw Away
Sounds like fun & must bring back a lot of memories.
I remember listening to 45’s too – when I was little :)
