When my husband and I got married and moved into our first home, he brought along boxes and boxes of childhood treasures. Inside one of those boxes was his dog-eared collection of Curious George books.
I wasn’t sure at that time why we needed children’s books, but since we had an entire 900 square feet to ourselves, the box was tucked away to be looked at later. Now, many bedtime stories and rocking chair snuggles later, I am thankful for that box.
My youngest, in particular, has a great love for the “naughty monkey” Curious George, and when she asked for a monkey party this year, I knew she wasn’t asking for just any monkey, but for one specific monkey, and all of his adventures.
What better way to celebrate than to reinact all his adventures! Picking which book to use was a fairly simple process of deciding that we didn’t want to swallow puzzle pieces or accidentally launch ourselves into outer space. After happily re-reading every single H.A Rey book in the house, my little girl chose Curious George Flies a Kite for her birthday adventure.
We started the party with story time,
When George got to play ball, so did we!
Soccer in the backyard.
See that monkey ball? My little girl spotted it for 99 cents – I love great deals like that!
Then, back to reading our story.
George searched for bunnies, and so did we!
Hide and seek. The person who was “it” got to wear the monkey tail, (made out of a giant pipe cleaner) hooked around their waist. They all wanted the tail! If I could go back and do this party over I’d make tails for everyone. Back to story time…
Nap time in the book – sure we can do that!
George went fishing, and so did we!
For monkeys! Everyone tried to make the longest Barrel of Monkeys chain using only one hand
Some chains were short and others long,
but Ms. N won this game without a doubt.
Back to story time!
George got to eat cake, and so did we!
Cake before dinner!?! My little girl was so surprised that she asked me “really?!” at least 3 times.
We served chocolate banana cupcakes with frozen bananas instead of ice-cream (which should have been served on a pretty platter rather than my ugly cookie sheet, but oh-well). Yummy!
Of course someone childish (who was not a child, ahem… Daddy) remembered the version of Happy Birthday that includes “you look like a monkey” so we had to sing that as an encore to the Birthday song. It was received with gales of laughter.
Time to check on George and see what he was up to now!
George flew a kite, and so did we!
Okay, so we ran around flying balloons instead, but I didn’t want to count on windy weather.
George got to take home a bunny, and so did we!
Well, not real ones. The kids sculpted their own baby bunnies out of clay to take home.
They also got to bring home their own Barrel of Monkeys game, some coloring pages, stickers,
and lots and lots of candy bananas.
It was a fun adventure for a curious 6 year old.
*sigh* I remember when another little girl turned 6…
Your little girl is precious! That is a brilliantly themed party! I’m glad she had a blast. :)
