If your child has struggled with learning to read, you are probably seeing these letters everywhere. OG materials, OG programs, OG tutors. What is OG dyslexia remediation, and why is it so important?
OG stands for Orton-Gillingham. Anna Orton and Samuel Gillingham were psychologists who developed the first reliable dyslexia treatment in the 1930s. It teaches phonemic awareness through structured, explicit, direct instruction, incorporating multisensory teaching techniques, parts-to-whole learning, and lots of repetition. Phonics, vocabulary development, fluency, and comprehension strategies are all covered. Despite the passage of time, OG methods remain the only scientifically proven teaching method for dyslexics. Fact sheet 1, Fact sheet 2,
Paying for tutoring and/or materials is expensive. Don’t waste time using methods that aren’t effective.
To be clear, there is no one single Orton-Gillingham curriculum, rather, there are multiple programs that are based on the research of Orton and Gillingham. There are slight differences, but all include the multisensory systematic approach originally described in the research.
Our favorite Orton-Gillingham programs include:
- Wilson Reading System *our personal favorite
- Barton Reading and Spelling *our 2nd choice
- Lindamood Bell “LiPS”
Additional OG program details
